Project Description
Nestled in the heart of historical Smithfield, remarkable residential structures stand as testaments to the craftsmanship of centuries past. One such home, characterized by its striking multi-colored facade and a prominently placed scalloped cedar shingled turret, was originally built in the 1800s with a terne tin metal roof. In the early 1900s, a Buckingham slate roof was installed over the existing metal roof, complete with a hidden internal gutter. However, this beautiful home had been experiencing leaks for some time, prompting several unsuccessful attempts by other contractors to locate the source.
Enter The Roofing Company, ready to take on the challenge!
Our team successfully identified the leak's origin, which lay around the internal gutter behind the cedar wood siding under the Buckingham slate roof on the backside of the home. The images and notes below outline the cause of the leak and the areas that required repair.
Materials Used:
DuPont™ Tyvek® house wrap for the repair area.
Recycled Buckingham Blue/Black slate for the repairs, adhering to early 1900s slate industry standards.
New scalloped cedar shingles installed to match the original design.
Custom stainless steel components, including a soldered window pan, flashing around the window, drip edge at the eave, and transition flashing.
Customer Feedback:
"You were wonderful to work with, and we appreciated your prompt and thorough work while here. It was good to know what to expect regarding the timeline before the work could begin. We believe the efforts to stop the leak were successful, but we will only know for sure after a hard rain with wind from the north. That hasn’t happened yet, but we will let you know if it was effective. The slate roof inspection, repair, and update are greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your attention and work; we’ll keep you informed about the leak."
