Strength and Durability
Slate roofing is one of the strongest and most durable materials on the market today. Slate is a natural stone that is highly resistant to weathering, moisture, and fire. It is also resistant to insects and other pests, which can damage other types of roofing materials.

Slate is a dense material that has extremely low moisture absorption. This means that there is a minute expansion and contraction with changes in temperature, which can cause other roofing materials to crack and warp over time.

Beauty and Functionality
The most commonly installed is the Blue/Black Buckingham slate variety from Buckingham County, Virginia. Buckingham County is only about 4 hours northwest of Hampton Roads. Buckingham Slate warranties their product for 150 years. Having the lowest water absorption rate of any American slate, it is safe to say it should outlive the home it was installed on. You will find many slate roofs of this variety in Norfolk, Virginia. There are also several green and buff-colored slate roofs in the Hilton Village section of Newport News that were quarried and shipped from the slate valley area in Vermont.

Longevity & Low Maintenance
The longevity of a slate roof depends on a variety of factors, including the quality of the slate,
the installation technique, and the maintenance schedule.

Natural slate roofing is recommended for ultimate impact resistance and fire resistance. It easily passed UL 2218 Class 4, the toughest impact test (slate shingles show no evidence of cracks or ruptures on the front or back). At the request of the National Slate Association, more lab testing was conducted to confirm the ability of the roofing slate to withstand hail damage.

Slate is installed using a special technique that involves overlapping the tiles and securing them with nails, clips, or hooks. This creates a long-lasting water-shedding high-performance roofing system that helps to prevent water from penetrating the roof and causing damage.

Slate roofing requires no more maintenance than any other style of roof. Just like all roofs, they should be inspected by professional slate roofers every few years or so. Homeowners should conduct their own inspections yearly. Start in the attic and look for water stains. The exterior can be inspected by use of a simple pair of binoculars right from the ground. Look for slates that are missing, broken, sliding out, or have holes in them. If an area of your roof is obstructed, be creative, just be safe, and never walk around on a slate roof!

A note from Brian Chalsma, President of The Roofing Company, Inc. and former President of the National Slate Association: Slate roofing practices haven’t changed in the last 100 years, yet so many roofs are repaired incorrectly. I have personally seen anything from nails through the face of the slate, a plastic product used instead of real slate, tar slapped on anything that looks like a leak, and the most common incorrect repair of them all, the metal straphanger.

When trying to find experts in roofing that will properly diagnose and repair your slate roof, the best thing to do is educate yourself!

Ask your neighbors for references. See who they have used in the past. Often you will hear who NOT to use which is just as important as whom you should call.

This is a very informative book on the history of slate roofing in the United States. Kevin Saunders replaced 5 vents on our roof. He was extremely courteous and professional. The job was done with great attention to detail and efficiency. He kept us informed of the job progress and explained all charges. Once he finished, everything was left in perfect order, without a trace of evidence that repairs had been done to our roof (of course except for the new vent fixtures). We recently had our roof and skylights replaced. Jason initially came out for the estimate and evaluation. Very pleased with the information and recommendations he provided. Jay and Kevin came next to do a site check and to measure the skylights. On install day, the crew showed up at 7:00 a.m. and by 7:30 the old shingles were being scraped and removed. Had a minor mishap with the skylights not being the correct size but Jay got the issue corrected the same day. One concern I had was that at least one of the crew was smoking a cigarette while working on the roof and it was breezy that day and another crew member dropped (totally unexpected) a hammer through one of the open skylight holes and it slightly damaged an end table. We have received several compliments from our neighbors on the roof and would certainly recommend The Roofing Company, Inc. to anyone in our area interested in roof and skylight replacement.

This company installed a new roof 11 years ago. Chuck Simpson was the person handling the job. I recently noticed a very slow leak, so I contacted the company again to see if they could fix it. Chuck Simpson is still with the company. He came out and fixed the leak (caused by a tiny nail) and then inspected the rest of my roof and put sealant on any places that he thought could be possible problems in the future. There was no charge for this service even though the labor warranty ended 6 years ago. This company really stands behind their work. I am going to recommend them to anyone needing roof work.

My wife and I chose the Roofing Company to install a new roof on our house in Kiln Creek. They installed a GAF Roof with the Golden Pledge Warranty and we are excited to have the peace of mind that comes with not having to worry about our roof for a long time. They recently came out for our one year check up to make sure that everything is holding up well. We noticed a difference with our roof the first time a heavy rain came through and all we heard inside the house was silence. We do like the sound of rain drops but the peace and quiet was wonderful as well. They went above and beyond what we expected, replacing fascia boards that were rotting and installing them in a way to prevent the rot from coming back. They installed kickback flashing to keep the water away from the siding and walls of the house and copper pipe collars that not only look pretty but will last the test of time. We cant be happier with the service that we got from both Greg, Brian as well as the entire crew that came out. Thank you all for everything that you did for us.

I absolutely love the solar tubes!! And solar night lights! Solar tubes were not new to me as we have one in the stairwell and my mom has a couple, but I underestimated the difference they would make upstairs. With the light from the bedroom windows overflowing into the hallway I would have never had the tubes installed, but I had already bought them when our house was being built so just went with it ... so glad I did!! Ken was the first face of the company that I saw and was great. He checked out the areas where I wanted the solar tubes, took pictures, then sat down with me and explained everything. He suggested adding the solar nightlights which again didn't seem like a big deal to me, but they inadvertently made the project less expensive due to the solar rebates available so it was a no-brainer. And, I love the solar nightlights!! It will be great when my grandkids are here and get up in the middle of the night ... they can see to get to the bathroom without flipping on lights!! Kevin was the man that did the work. He contacted me to let me know he was on the way, arrived at the appointed time, did an awesome installation job, and cleaned up after himself. The solar nightlights did not come in in time, but arrived after he was at my house so, yes, he drove back to the office/warehouse to get them so he could complete the job that day! Kind, polite, professional, and a job well done ... what else could one ask for?!?!? Ken came out the beginning of November and estimated a February install. It was a month later before I pulled the trigger and said let's do this. I was never given a new date, but I assumed that now it wouldn't be till March. Seven days later I received a phone call; there was a cancelation and my solar tubes were installed 8 days after I signed the contract!! Win, Win!! In the photos below, I covered the solar tubes for the "before" pic so you could see the difference. Today is actually a cloudy, overcast day, but you can still see what a huge difference it makes.The 3rd pic is at night to give you an idea of the amount of light the solar nightlights produce.

This is the first google review I have ever written. I called about a small leak in my roof (we noticed some we cardboard boxes in our eves) The rep came out, spent an hour and a half looking over the roof, climbed on top, checked over everything and came back to me with his recommendations, "You had one (1) nail up. I hammered it down, added some caulk, checked over the rest of the roof, and did a couple of quick fixes. You should be all set. Call me in 5 years when you need a new roof." I was out of work at the time (covid). Talk about a weight off my shoulders.I am not looking forward to purchasing a new roof when necessary (no one looks forward to that). But I know exactly who I will call when I need one. The Roofing Company, through their outstanding customer service, has earned my business and my recommendation. Three C's were involved with our new roof installment. Cost, Communication, and Clean up. From our initial cost assessment with Chuck to the clean up crew we were very satisfied. Every step along the way we were kept informed about what was happening next, and when it would be done. I never had to call and question what was going on or when they were coming to do the work. Greg was a great onsite project manager. He kept us informed on how the job was going, what extra needed to be done and why. ( He was even nice to the dog!) I was extremely happy with the clean up after the roof was finished. They can come and clean up around my house anyday! Sorry I never got to meet James.

Chuck renewed my faith in the Roofing Company. He came out to inspect my NEW roof for a suspected leak. He crawled into the hot attic a took a picture of an AC line that had worn insulation. Condensation was causing the ceiling stain and not a roof leak. Chuck took time to take some pictures of the roof exterior, too. Still looks great! We have an old house with a "complicated" roof. The Roofing Company provides excellent diagnostics and repairs. Mike and James are great to work with! Mike explained the work thoroughly, and he and James were very careful placing ladders etc. to avoid damaging shrubbery. They finished the job quicker than I expected. The responsiveness of The Roofing Company from start to finish was top notch. We filled out an online request form at night for a roof replacement estimate and were contacted immediately. Ken came out to the house and spent well over an hour and a half inspecting not only the roof but the attic as well. He presented us with several options, explained everything in detail and answered all of our questions.After performing our due diligence and receiving quotes from other companies, we ultimately chose The Roofing Company based on their presentation, professionalism and pricing.We were contacted by Debbie at the office who set an install date approximately two weeks out. We were happy to be contacted by Greg a day later who said he could fit us in a bit earlier than expected. He then came out to the house a few days before the install to set our expectations and review the entire process.The crew showed up on time, performed the install flawlessly and then cleaned up thoroughly after themselves. I am so happy that I chose The Roofing Company to complete my roofing repairs! After the bad wind storm we had, I noticed that I had multiple shingles down and an exposed part of my roof. I moved into my house a year ago as a first time home buyer and I have never had any need to contact a roofer. I called around and what I loved most about The Roofing Company is that they provide free estimates (as long as you aren't selling the house) and that they really worked with me to get someone here as soon as possible. Brain came out to do the estimate and he explained the process to me and he was very kind and knowledgable and the estimate was very reasonable. The person that came out and completed the work was Adrian and he was amazing!!! Even though I wasn't home, he kept me updated via text messages (since I couldn't accept calls at the time) and he sent me detailed email messages with pictures showing the before and after pics and all the work that was completed. He not only repaired the shingles, but he inspected my roof, fixed some of my gutters and resealed my PVC pipes at no extra charge!!! Adrian went above and beyond and when he came back to finish the job, he was very kind and understanding! I will definitely be using The Roofing Company for all my roofing needs in the future and would recommend them to anybody in the area!

I did some checking on roofers before settling on The Roofing Company. While cost was a major issue, I was also concerned about quality. After all, this was an investment that I wanted to last more than a quarter century. Ultimately I settled on The Roofing Company primarily for quality and reasonable cost. The foreman for the job - Rick - supervised the entire process and had the whole show rolling right on time. As projected the roof was stripped down to the wood, cleaned and re-roofed in a single day. The crew sheltered the shrubs exposed to the old shingles, got the nails cleaned up, and left a good-looking, new roof. They also cleaned out the gutters and provided some other actions at no additional cost - just simple kindnesses. Two points I also want to share: first, if you are ex-military the company will help you obtain a refund of around $500. Second, The Roofing Company insists on using storm-resistant shingles (well above normal shingles) for that next hurricane. They believe in them so much that they lowered the cost of storm-resistant shingles below the cost of normal shingles. Consider that when you're shopping.

Thank you for sending such a diligent worker to my home this afternoon. Ken Ashcom came to inspect my roof for a possible rodent entry. He was sent alone to check out my very sleep roof. Ken tried multiple ways to get close to the area I was concerned about. He succeeded and told me that is was an area with copper flashing and no repair was needed. I've had The Roofing Company out to my home several times. Two years in a row to patch blown off shingles and, in June 2018, to replace my roof after it was severely damaged by a windstorm. (The two spots where The Roofing Company had previously patched were undamaged!) Things happen, and a year later two shingles fell off (not where water could leak in), so I called in for a warranty service call. In a day or two, Nito was out to my home and assessed my roof's situation, located where to acquire the proper replacement shingles, and was back a few days later to quickly and professionally install them. We were in desperate need of a new roof on a portion of our house. Chuck Simpson with The Roofing Company was recommended to me by a reliable friend in the construction business. Setting up a meeting with Chuck was easy. He came out to assess the roof and explained everything there was to know thoroughly with no pressure. The price was right so we went for it. The Project Manager we worked with was Rick. Setting up the job with Rick was an easy process. He explained everything about what we could expect. The day of the job, the crew showed up on time and knocked it out quickly the same day. We weren't around so Rick kept me in the loop as the job progressed. The roof looks great and we couldn't be happier with everything. Thank you to Chuck, Rick, and the rest of the team we worked with! Jay Rosen was here today -- for over four hours -- to replace 3 roof pipe collars and one electrical mast collar that were way beyond their life expectancy. I know how careful and professional his work was because I could see him from my desk.So far, all of my interactions with The Roofing Company have been very professional and reputable. Ken Ashcom took the original order, and I found no fault with him either.My schedule was accommodated as needed, and I am pleased with the company. I will certainly consider them when I have to replace my shingles, which will be in the next few years.

This was my 3rd opportunity to work with TRC. In the late 90s they replaced my roof which was suffered hail damage. 2 years ago they replaced the roof on my house which suffered wind damage. This week they replaced the roof on my dad’s house which was old. TRC was 3 for 3 with customer satisfaction. The first 2 roofs were homes with HOA so we went by their book with single coloring. We selected the Hickory shingle for my dad’s house. It has red accents, matching the brick, and it looks wonderful. Rick Mulligan, our site manager, was wonderful and his site crew did a fantastic job. I highly recommend The Roofing Company when you have to replace your roof!

I was pleased from beginning to end. I appreciated the initial consult and detailed discussion which led to the purchase of he new roof. We waited a brief period of time for the installation due to scheduling and of course weather. I didn't need to take time off from work during installation. I am so pleased with our experience with The Roofing Company. Everyone who worked on our project from Chuck to James, Josh and CJ were great and I felt like they really cared about our roofing issues and the timeline involved due to our selling our house. They were neat and kept me informed daily on exactly what they were doing and when they would finish. From experience I have learned not every roofing company knows what they are doing with a slate roof. If you have a slate roof, this is the ONLY company you should consider! I will be using them again when I move and have some gutter and roofing issues addressed.

We are very pleased with The Roofing Company. The staff was very professional from the beginning to the end of our interaction.Chuck came to discuss our roofing job and gave us an estimate. We have an old slate roof and were concerned about how the work would be done. He was very knowledgeable and took the time to answer all our questions. We were kept well informed about scheduling.Kevin S. and James Z. did the repairs on our roof. They were diligent, professional, personable and friendly. They let us know what they would be doing before they started; they answered our questions. They worked efficiently and carefully and really knew what they were doing up on the roof! A third young man also helped on the last day but can't recall his name. When they were finished each day they left a clean work area. We are very pleased with the completed job.Because of a death in the family we had to reschedule the start of our job. The company was cooperative and easy to work with to reschedule.It is good to know that we can depend on The Roofing Company to do an excellent job if and when we need any future roofing work done. We would highly recommend The Roofing Company.

We had our roof re-done almost 5 years ago, and just noticed we had a leak. They came out and James Zajd was awesome. He took the time to determine what was leaking and make the necessary repairs. He went into the attic to confirm what he was thinking the problem was and repaired it correctly and efficiently. In our opinion the help he provided was above and beyond. He is a great asset to your company.
